A combination of technology and tact foiled a suicide attempt at the Bandra Worli Sea Link in the early hours of Wednesday. It was a nerve-jangling 35 minutes for the sea link staff after the high-end CCTV cameras captured a man standing on the bridge’s parapet, holding the railings, around 3.10 am.
While one of the sea link staffers kept talking to him about the futility of ending his life, around a dozen of his colleagues and the cops stood some distance away, waiting for a chance to pull the man to safety.
It was only around 3.45 am that the ‘negotiator’ – sea link supervisor Chetan Kadam – managed to catch hold of the man, identified as Bhayandar resident Pradeep Yadav, 27, who later told the police that family problems had pushed him to the brink. He told the police that he had boarded a taxi from Bhayandar for south Mumbai, and told the cabbie to stop in the middle of the sea link.
Technology-based surveillance along the sea link was beefed up only around a year ago, when 80 high-end CCTV cameras were installed. The decision itself came after much dithering and several rounds of correspondence between the Mumbai Entry Point Ltd (MEPL), which is in charge of the bridge’s maintenance and toll collection, the MSRDC, and the Mumbai Police.
Serious questions were raised after more than a dozen suicides were reported from the sea link from 2009, when it was thrown open to public, to 2014. Before the high-end cameras were installed, the 5.6-km stretch had only six CCTV cameras that produced, at best, grainy images.
