After remaining elusive for 12 days since a sex racket she was involved faced a raid on July 20, Kalyani Deshpande was on Thursday arrested by officials of Kothrud police station.
Police officials informed that Jayashree alias Kalyani Umesh Deshpande (46), a resident of Pashan-Sus Road, was arrested from Sus village.
Deshpande has over 20 similar cases registered against her since 2000, and is widely known as one of the biggest players in the city in high profile sex racket cases. In 2014, she had even been externed from city limits for two years, said cops.
Deputy commissioner of police (zone I) Sudhir Hiremath, under whose jurisdiction Kothrud police station falls, confirmed Deshpande’s arrest to Pune Mirror.
According to an FIR registered with Kothrud PS, a raid was conducted by members of the crime branch as well as Kothrud police at a flat in Left Bhusari Colony on July 20. Three girls, aged 19, 23 and 24 — all Mumbai residents — were rescued from the flat. Agent Ravi Tapase, who was working for Deshpande, was also arrested.
According to police, Deshpande inducts girls from other cities into the flesh trade. The usual modus operandi she follows is to ask her agent to rent a flat in the city as accommodation for the girls. Meanwhile, she cracks deal with clients and accordingly, customers are be sent to the apartment.
